Belgian Elise Mertens advanced to the second round of the Stuttgart Open.

Mertens defeated Belarusian Aliaksandra Sasnovich in the first round on Monday, 7-6, 6-2.

Mertens, ranked 29th in the world, will face the winner of the match between eighth-seeded Russian Diana Schnyder and her compatriot Veronika Kudermetova in the second round.

Russian Anastasia Potapova also advanced to the second round after defeating Denmark’s Clara Tauson 2-6, 7-6, 6-3.
